It takes 5 to 10 minutes to walk through this section, depending
on how much playing you do along the way.

The tour is "live". All of the text and buttons you'll
see are part of the real conference, not just dummy screens put together
to show you how it works. So, please follow the tour in order from
top to bottom for it to work as intended.

Go ahead and click on the first folder, "<b>Getting around</b>", to start the tour (you may
need to scroll down to see the folder).

As you complete each section of the tour, you'll come back to this page.
Just click on the next folder to continue.

heading="Every folder and discussion shows the current path, just below the
page banner. This lets you see where you are in the conference, and lets
you immediately go back to any of these folders.
At the very left edge of the current path is an open folder icon, followed by the
site name.
If you click here, you will go back to the very top level. (Try this if you like,
and then click back down to this "Getting around" folder.)
Click on the "<b>Folders</b>" item (below) to continue. When you return to this page,
click on "<b>Discussions</b>".

heading="Folders are used to organize the conference.
A folder is like a folder or directory on your hard disk.
It contains discussions or other sub-folders.
Every folder has a title and a heading which describe the folder.
The current path includes each folder, so you can
see where you are. If you click on any folder or you will go to that page.

and a series of messages posted by people
who are responding and conversing. Discussions are not "chat-rooms", they are more like organized electronic mail. You can
browse a conference and post a message at any time. Someone else will see your post later, when
they are browsing or when they check for new messages.
All of the messages added to a discussion are kept until the whole discussion is deleted.
You can always read the whole discussion from beginning to end, so you never have to
wonder what people are talking about.
If you click on the user picture in a message, you'll get a short page of information
about the user. You can send an e-mail directly to that person,
or visit the user's home page if provided by that user.
Scroll down if you need to, and click on the <b>user picture</b> (below). Click on the "<b>OK</b>" button in the user info page to return here.
Because a discussion may have hundreds of messages posted to it, long discussions
are split into smaller pieces. In a long discussion, you'll see buttons at the top
and/or bottom that let you go back and forth, or you can just click on
the "Recent Messages" button to see the most recent material.
Click on the "<b>Guided Tour</b>" folder in the current path (above) to continue with the tour.

After you've posted a message, notice that there are "Edit" and "Delete" buttons
following your text. You can always delete a message you've posted, at any time.
You have 30 minutes after posting or editing a message to fix it up. So you can post
a message, see how it looks, and then edit it to fix any layout, typos, or
text in the message.
After you've posted a message and played with editing or deleting it,
click on the "<b>Guided Tour</b>" folder (above) to continue.

heading="You start a new discussion by clicking on the "Add Discussion" button in the toolbar
at the end of a folder.
Then you fill out a form with the title and any heading for the discussion.
Being able to start a new discussion means that the conference can
grow to suit your needs. You are not forced to use a fixed, rigid structure.
You should start a new discussion when you want to discuss or ask something
that isn't really addressed by existing ones.
For example, you might start a discussion to ask a new question.
The heading for a discussion can be left empty if the title is descriptive enough,
or it can be used to define and expand on the title.
If you like, go ahead and add a discussion here (you may need to scroll down
to see the toolbar at the end). After you add the discussion,
you will be able to delete it or edit it until a message is posted to it.
Once a discussion has messages, only the conference manager can delete or edit it.
When you're ready to continue, click on the "<b>Guided Tour</b>" folder (above).

heading="The conference automatically keeps track of messages as you view them.
When you see a discussion in a folder, the listing includes how many messages
are in the discussion, and how many are new messages. This means that you can
browse through a conference and check for new messages as you go.
<i>Note</i>:  once you've pulled down a list of messages, all of the messages
in that list are marked as having been viewed, even though you may
not have read them all. The conference server only knows what it
has sent you, not what you've actually read.
There is a much better way to check for new messages, through
your "Subscription List". After you subscribe to a discussion or folder,
you can later check your subscription list
at any time. You'll then be shown the first new message, discussion, or folder that has
been added since you last checked.
As you view new items, you can post messages, create new discussions, and browse
other items. When you're ready to find the next new item, you just click on "Check Messages" again.
Go ahead and click on the "<b>Subscribe</b>" button in the toolbar below (you may need
to scroll down to see the toolbar). Then click on the "<b>OK</b>" button in the confirmation
page.
You have just subscribed to this folder, and all the sub-folders and discussions in it.
(This folder only has one discussion, for illustration purposes, but
in real life there will be many.)
Now click on the "<b>Check Messages</b>" button in
the toolbar to check for anything "new".

heading="User preferences let you change your name and/or password, determine
whether you want see user pictures or not, and allow you to enter your
own picture (instead of getting the default picture provided by the
conference manager), and so on. Click on the "Preferences" button in any toolbar
to update this information.
The preferences page also shows your subscription list, and lets you mark this list as current.
When you first come into a conference and subscribe to something, it
may have a very large number of items. So, you can "mark your subscriptions
current" so that you don't have to wade through everything.
To bring your subscription list current, you would just click on the Preferences
button, then check the box in the subscription list section, and then "Update Preferences".
For the purposes of this tour, just click on the "<b>Guided Tour</b>" folder (above). You're just about done.
